CIA Agent. Business Owner. Lobbyist. Bigamist. David Miller was the envy of both friend and foe, with a dream job and perfect family. He seemed to have it all. But he wanted more. One family wasn't enough he wanted two. Two careers weren't enough; he invented a third. He juggled it all quite well . . . until the day his two wives found out about each other. David Miller groped for ways to hold on to his finances and reputation. His solution? Murder. But it had to be done right, leaving him off the list of suspects. In Deadly Pretender, #1 New York Times bestselling author Karen Kingsbury dives into the tangled world of deceit, greed, and lust, and reveals what could drive a seemingly upright citizen to live a double life, and then, to commit the unthinkable.
Deadly Pretender eBook Karen Kingsbury
I have been reading true crime since I was about ten. Back then, the authors dug into and presented the stories of the characters involved, writing about what you never saw in the paper about the crime or those involved. Nowadays, many alleged true crime authors produce "books" that are nothing more than summation from what they find on the internet and perhaps an interview or two. Then the second half of the "book" is usually nothing more than trial transcript, scientific explanations of evidence or some kind of filler to make it appear like they have written a novel. This author reminds me of another great true crime author, Lowell Cauffiel, who, unfortunately for TC fans, has also left that genre. Mrs. Kingsbury presents a good story and keeps the trial summary very short. As a TC fan, I couldn't have asked for anything more. I would highly recommend this book to fans like me, who want the story behind the crime, the characters involved and no boring transcript of the trial

Deadly Pretender eBook Karen Kingsbury Reviews
I LOVED THIS BOOK and had trouble making myself put it down. Some people complained in reviews because she did not put a Christian aspect in the book. People this is a TRUE crime book. If the people in the book themselves had no Christian aspect to their lives then she cannot put it in the book. People get too use to fictional crime and TV crime which also is mostly fiction and don't care for real crime because it is not fast moving and often not sensational. I also like her style of writing. It was easy to keep up with who was who though there were a lot of people. If you like fiction you may not like this book but if you like true crime books I think you will like or love this book. I would definitely buy more of her crime books if she has any others or does more in the future.
I had seen the movie on the life of David Miller on TV. It impressed me so much that I sought out this book. Kingsbury nails her diagnosis Miller was a pathological narcissist, a con man and a sociopath. These people are all around us. Her book serves as a harbinger for those who have not encountered their own David Miller and a poignant reminder for those of us who have stay well clear.
If you have ever heard of NPD [Narcissistic Personality Disorder], this true story will give you an excellent, indepth view of the working of the narcissistic predator's mind. A real page turner that will keep you rivetted to every word; a book I would highly recommend to all readers of this genre and especially those interested in the motivation and psychology of a personality disorder that leads to murder. A really well written and astounding story that demonstrates the dangers of falling prey to this type of well disguised, highly destructive and very dangerous person.
I actually give this book 4.5/5.
While reading this book,it's hard to imagine someone that could be so utterly full of deceitful evil as David Miller. We have all met and/or known deceitful people; it is an unfortunate thing that we all eventually encounter in life, no matter how careful you are with those that you chose to surround yourself with, but David Miller was another beast entirely and reading about him, it's easy to see the charm and charisma that he used to fool so many people.
I found myself being continually shocked at the lies and levels of deceitful complexity that David's double life entailed. Even at the start of the book, he was bad news and already operating on a level of lying that was incredulous to fathom, and that was only the tip of iceberg. And poor Dorothy and Jayne, David's two wives that he was married to at the same time, but neither of them knew of the other until things had gotten so far out of hand that the situation was dangerous for both of them. Lies upon lies, upon lies are laid out by David as his web of selfishness only gets deeper and more complex as the story moves along.
One downside to this book was some of the dialog. I'm sure the vast majority of situations in this book were real and were discovered through known facts of the case, but with any story like this, there have to be some gaps that need to be filled in, and with this book no doubt some of that is what was said between some of the people and some of the lines that were chosen to fill in those gaps -or rather, guess at what might have been said - were very lackluster, or dare I say, cheesy. It's a minor complaint though because in all honesty, this book is a real page turner and kept my jaw on the floor at the audacity of David Miller. By the end of the book and seeing the full scope of the monster that David Miller was, I found myself picking my jaw up out of the basement; the floor was simply not deep enough for it to be hanging in the shock of what I was reading.
This book isn't graphic; it isn't full of sex, gore and I don't believe it employed even ONE curse word, but it didn't need any of those things to be truly compelling and a shocking chronicle of one man's selfish sociopathic life that caused devastation to so many people, but mainly to two innocent women that he was simultaneously married to. But the devastation sadly fell more squarely onto on of those two woman in the end.
If you're into true crime stories, then definitely check this one out. No matter how many you've read, Deadly Pretender is sure to surprise you at just how evil one man can be and the tornado of destruction that his lies can leave in their wake.
I know Karen no longer writes True Crime books, but WOW this book had me from the first page as all of Karen's books do! It is evident to see why Karen decided to pen Christian Life Changing Fiction Books. The horrific story of David Miller's betrayal to 2 unsuspecting wives had me sharing the story with others for days and I found myself at times trying to warn the characters while I was reading the book. Would love to see this made into a movie like Missy's Murder. I also enjoyed reading Karen's letter to her readers detailing why she stopped writing True Crime books. Throughout the book it is evident of Karen's spiritual connection with the individual in the story. Especially when she writes about the PI who prays and has a Bible verse on his desk. These are Karen's words from her letter to her readers "They are true stories of choices and consequences, true stories of tragedy and darkness in a world that desperately needs light. There is no knowledge of light without darkness, no sense of good without evil, and no understanding of our desperate need for God without understanding how far gone we truly are."
